If you're looking for an inexpensive electric commuter, this 2016 Nissan LEAF S is exactly the kind of EV that can make a ton of sense.
The big question with any older Nissan LEAF isn't just mileage — it's the battery.
In our real-world use, we're seeing approximately 70–80 miles of range, depending on temperature, climate-control use, speed and driving habits.
For someone commuting around Boulder, Longmont, Louisville, Lafayette, Broomfield, Denver or the surrounding area — especially someone who can charge at home every night — that's still a very useful amount of range.
And with only 74,848 actual miles, this is a relatively low-mileage example.
Because if your driving habits fit the car, the value proposition is hard to ignore.
No gasoline.
No engine oil changes.
No spark plugs.
No timing belt.
No alternator.
No conventional automatic transmission.
And you can plug it in at home and wake up every morning with a charged vehicle.
For a household that already has another vehicle for long-distance trips, an inexpensive LEAF can be a fantastic second car. It's also a great option for a student, local commuter or anyone who simply doesn't need 250 miles of range every day.
We want to be very clear about what you're buying.
This is the 24-kWh LEAF, not one of the later long-range EVs. CARFAX identifies it as a 2016 Nissan LEAF S-24 with an electric drivetrain and front-wheel drive.
The dashboard is currently displaying:
And we're currently seeing approximately:
Actual EV range is never a fixed number. It will vary based on outside temperature, heater or A/C use, highway speed, elevation changes, driving style and other conditions.
We're not going to advertise it as a "100-mile EV" because that isn't what we're seeing.
Plan around 70–80 miles under favorable real-world conditions and understand that winter temperatures, high speeds and heavy climate-control use can reduce that.
For the right driver, that's plenty.
This is another area where this LEAF stands out.
We didn't simply charge it, wash it and put it up for sale.
Ridgeline Automotive has invested $1,888.73 into its current inspection and reconditioning.
The four new tires, mounting/balancing and TPMS work represent approximately $578 of the recent reconditioning alone.
Air conditioning isn't something we're willing to ignore on an EV.
Unlike a gasoline vehicle, where cabin heat is largely a byproduct of the engine, HVAC use has a direct impact on your available driving range in an EV.
Our shop replaced:
That portion of the repair order totaled $862.26.
So when summer rolls around, you're not immediately inheriting an expensive A/C repair.
People unfamiliar with EVs are sometimes surprised to learn that they still have a conventional 12-volt battery.
And on an EV, a weak 12V battery can cause all kinds of strange electrical problems.
Our inspection found the existing battery was weak, so instead of waiting for it to strand the next owner, we replaced it with a new NAPA battery.
That's another immediate maintenance item already handled.
The CARFAX on this LEAF is remarkably clean.
CARFAX reports:
CARFAX also shows 11 service-history records and four previous owners.
This LEAF has a Colorado history dating all the way back to when it was new.
CARFAX shows it at Fort Collins Nissan with only 6 miles in March 2016, and the subsequent ownership history remained in Colorado.
That's useful information with an older EV because we're not looking at a mystery vehicle that spent years bouncing around different parts of the country.
CARFAX also documents an interesting piece of EV-specific service history.
At 22,063 miles, Woodmen Nissan performed a maintenance inspection and charged the high-voltage battery.
Today, at approximately 74,848 miles, the vehicle is still displaying 11 of its original 12 battery-capacity bars.
That's the number we're much more interested in than simply looking at the age of the vehicle.
Ridgeline isn't simply a used-car dealership.
Ridgeline Auto Brokers and Ridgeline Automotive operate vehicle sales and automotive repair under the same roof.
Before offering this LEAF for sale, our technicians performed a comprehensive inspection that included:
And when we found items that needed attention, we actually repaired them.
That's what we mean by Ridgeline Reconditioned.
We think it's important to sell an older EV to the right person.
This probably isn't the vehicle we'd recommend if you routinely drive 150 miles per day or regularly take long interstate road trips.
But if your normal day consists of 20, 30, 40 or 50 miles?
This could make a tremendous amount of sense.
It's particularly well suited for:
With 11/12 battery bars and approximately 70–80 miles of current real-world range, there is still plenty of useful life here for the right driver.
We actually like EVs.
We've sold and serviced Nissan LEAFs, Chevrolet Bolts, Volkswagen ID.4s, Volvo Recharge models, BMW i3s, Toyota RAV4 EVs and other electric and plug-in vehicles.
We're comfortable explaining both the advantages and limitations of an older EV.
We aren't going to pretend this LEAF has 200 miles of range.
It doesn't.
What it does offer is a very inexpensive way to get into an electric vehicle with 11/12 battery bars, approximately 70–80 miles of useful range, low mileage, four new tires, a new 12V battery, repaired A/C and nearly $1,900 in recent Ridgeline reconditioning.
That's a compelling package for the right buyer.
We'll clearly explain the warranty coverage that applies to this EV at the time of purchase, as high-voltage batteries and EV drivetrain components are different from the conventional powertrain components covered on our gasoline vehicles.
You still receive our:
FREE 3,000-Mile Quality Control Inspection
And because we're a full automotive repair facility and NAPA Auto Care Center, we're still here after you buy it.
We're proud of the reputation we've built with both our sales and service customers.
