This is one of those cars that requires an explanation, because it is much more interesting than the badge on the hood suggests.

Meet the Saabaru.

Yes, it says Saab on the outside.

But underneath, this car is fundamentally a Subaru Impreza.

WHAT EXACTLY IS A “SAABARU”?

The Saab 9-2X came from a very unusual moment in automotive history.

At the time, General Motors owned Saab and also held a stake in Fuji Heavy Industries, Subaru's parent company. Saab wanted a smaller AWD vehicle for the North American market, and the GM/Subaru relationship gave them a shortcut: start with the proven Subaru Impreza.

But this wasn't simply an Impreza sent to a Saab dealer with different badges.

Fuji Heavy Industries and Saab jointly developed the 9-2X, and Subaru actually manufactured it in Japan at its Gunma Yajima plant. Subaru's own announcement from March 2004 confirms that the 9-2X was built on Fuji Heavy Industries' AWD platform and produced alongside its Japanese vehicles.

Saab then gave the car its own personality. The 9-2X received Saab-specific exterior styling, additional sound insulation, interior changes and chassis refinements.

The result was essentially a more unusual, Saab-flavored interpretation of the Subaru Impreza wagon.

Enthusiasts quickly gave it the nickname:

SAAB + SUBARU = SAABARU

And the nickname stuck.

THIS ONE IS THE 2.5L LINEAR WITH A 5-SPEED MANUAL

For 2005, Saab offered two versions.

The performance-oriented 9-2X Aero received the turbocharged Subaru WRX engine.

The 9-2X Linear, like this car, received Subaru's naturally aspirated 2.5-liter EJ253 boxer four-cylinder producing 165 horsepower. AWD was standard, and buyers could choose between an automatic and a 5-speed manual.

Our records confirm that this particular car has the EJ253 2.5L Subaru engine, and this one has the much more interesting 5-speed manual transmission.

ONE OF THE STRANGEST CHAPTERS IN SAAB HISTORY

The 9-2X was also significant for Saab.

It was Saab's first production model with standard all-wheel drive, its first with a horizontally opposed boxer engine, and unlike traditional Swedish-built Saabs, it was manufactured in Japan.

It also didn't last long.

The 9-2X was sold for only the 2005 and 2006 model years. When GM ended its ownership position in Fuji Heavy Industries, the unusual Saab/Subaru partnership came to an end as well.

That short production run is part of what makes these cars so interesting today. They represent a very specific point in automotive history when a Swedish brand owned by an American company teamed up with a Japanese manufacturer to create a Saab-branded Subaru.

You probably won't see another one parked next to you.

AND THIS ONE HAS A GREAT HISTORY

The history is arguably more important than the novelty.

This isn't an unknown 182,000-mile Subaru-based car that we picked up at auction, washed and put online.

We've known this vehicle for years.

CARFAX shows 46 service-history records, four previous owners, personal use and long-term Colorado history. Most importantly, CARFAX reports no accidents or damage.

The ownership history is especially encouraging for a vehicle of this age. One owner kept the car for approximately 13 years and 5 months, averaging only about 7,200 miles per year.

That long-term ownership was accompanied by consistent maintenance rather than a car that bounced from owner to owner every year.
